What to think about when you are planning your Wedding Flowers.

Congratulations! After the excitement of the engagement the wedding planning begins, this is an exciting time which can also be very daunting, you are after all planning your perfect day, which many of you will have dreamed of since you were a child.

There are lots of different things to think about and everyone has their own idea of what’s important.

Here are a few of my tips for planning the flowers for your wedding.

How much should I budget for flowers.

Unfortunately there isn’t an easy answer to this question, however my main question to you is how important are flowers to you? If you are only having flowers because you ‘have to’ then I suggest setting aside a smaller budget than if flowers are really important to you. This is your special day, so your day should be full of the things that are important to you as a couple.

A lot of studio based florists like myself have a minimum spend, my minimum spend is £500, this enables me to concentrate on each of my weddings and provide a bespoke service to each of my couples.

As with everything, you get what you pay for and a cheaper quote from another source can often mean less flowers hence a cheaper price. This will often compromise the look you have in mind.

I price each of my weddings individually as no wedding is ever the same however to give you a rough idea my bridal bouquets start at £90, bridesmaids £50 and buttonholes £8.

How can I make my budget go as far as possible?

Seasonal flowers and trust your florist!

Peonies for example are very reasonable in season (end May/June) however come December they will eat up you budget in seconds. Not only are they ridiculously expensive they will also be poor quality. Using seasonal flowers will not only make your budget go that little bit further but you will also get top quality flowers which are generally bigger and more beautiful.

Don’t worry if you don’t know what’s in season when you are getting married, your florist will know this and will be able to recommend lots of gorgeous flowers.

What flowers do I need?

You can have as many or as few flowers as you wish.

Usually the main flowers are bouquets for the Bride and Bridesmaids and Buttonholes for the Groom, Best Man, Fathers and Ushers.

Many people also have flowers on their tables, my top tip is go for something tall so guests can see under them or something low so guests can see over!

Other flowers that can really make your day that extra bit special are large arrangements for the ceremony, flowers for the chair ends during the ceremony and large installations at the end of the isle.

For the venue, large statement designs really make the venue pop, these include arrangements on staircases, mantle pieces and arches over doors and entrances.

My Top Tip

Use your budget wisely.

Yes it’s lovely to put flowers everywhere and have flowers in the toilets, on the cake table and on the welcome sign but these little bits all add up.

My top tip would be to spend your money on the important designs such as bouquets, buttonholes and table arrangements and if you have a larger budget go for a large statement installation instead of lots of little things, such as an arch at the end of your isle. This will look gorgeous as a backdrop during the ceremony and will also act as a stunning classy photo booth for your guests during the day and evening.
